MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Canada Stewart (Derry, N.H.) scored to tie the game in the 12th minute, but the Saint Anselm College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision against Stonehill College on Tuesday evening in the team's home finale at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks fall to 6-11, including 3-6 in the Northeast-10, and are mathematically eliminated from postseason play. The Skyhawks improve to 8-9, 4-5 NE-10.
Stonehill jumped on the board just 1:23 into the contest when Devin Ingersoll's scoop shot from the left was tipped just inside the far post by Erika Kelly to make it 1-0.
The Hawks tied it up 10:20 later when sophomore Bridget Davis (Mansfield, Mass.) sent a feed from the right endline and across the goalmouth where Stewart batted it into the back of the cage at the far post.
The contest remained that way through the first half until the 45th minute when Gina Sheehan sent a pass to the middle of the circle for Brittany Ford, who snapped a shot past freshman goalkeeper Shauna Whittemore (Bennington, N.H.) to put Stonehill on top, 2-1.
Whittemore made three saves, while Stonehill goalkeeper Elizabeth Genovese stopped one shot.
The Skyhawks outshot Saint Anselm, 10-3, including 8-0 in the second half. The Skyhawks also held a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners, including 5-0 in the second frame.
The Hawks wrap up their season Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. when they hit the road one final time to take on Bentley University.
