NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine) and junior Kat Scafidi (Hudson, N.H.) each drove in runs, but the Saint Anselm College softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Merrimack College at Warrior Diamond on Wednesday afternoon. Merrimack won the first game, 9-0, before earning a 4-2 victory in game two.
The Hawks fall to 8-9 on the season, including 0-2 in Northeast-10 play, while the Warriors improve to 8-9, 3-1 NE-10.
In game one, Merrimack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second against starter Christina Boehn (Stamford, Conn.). The Warriors then broke it open in the third and chased Boehn as they put up a six-spot to make it 9-0.
Boehn (2-2) went two-plus innings and allowed six runs on five hits. She struck out one and walked three. Sophomore Kelly DeSormier (Tiverton, R.I.) worked the final two innings and gave up three runs on two hits, while striking out two and walking one.
Trafton and freshman Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) each went 1-for-2, recording the only two hits for Saint Anselm.
In the second game, the Warriors once again started with a 3-0 lead as they scored three in the bottom of the first off starter Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.). The Hawks grabbed one run back in the second when Scafidi doubled to left-center, scoring freshman Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.), who walked.
After Merrimack went ahead 4-1 in the third, Saint Anselm sliced the deficit to two in the fourth on Trafton's second home run of the season.
Dalton tossed six innings and gave up four runs on six hits. She struck out two and walked seven.
Trafton finished 2-for-3, while Scafidi and Boucher went 1-for-3 to account for Saint Anselm's four hits.
The Hawks return to action Thursday, April 7 (3/5 p.m.) when they play host to Franklin Pierce University in doubleheader action in their first home game of the year at South Athletic Fields.
