Softball Splits Low-Scoring Doubleheader with Stonehill

MANCHESTER, N.H. – In a couple of nail-biters that saw both games won in the last inning, the Saint Anselm College softball team split a doubleheader with Stonehill College on Tuesday afternoon at South Athletic Fields. The Hawks won the first game 3-2 before dropping game two, 1-0.

The Hawks move to 19-17 on the season, including 11-10 in Northeast-10 play. The Skyhawks are now 16-24, 12-12 NE-10.

In the first game, the Hawks found themselves behind 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh after the Skyhawks got runs in the first and fourth innings off sophomore Kelly DeSormier (Tiverton, R.I.). With the game on the line, senior Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine) and freshman Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) singled back-to-back. After a tough at-bat, freshman Cara Crowley (Lynn, Mass.) drew a walk to load the bases, and senior Raylyn Glavin (Saugus, Mass.) followed suit to give the Hawks their first run. An RBI single from senior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly from freshman Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) gave the Hawks the walk-off victory.

DeSormier pitched the complete game to collect the win, scattering seven hits and walking none. The Hawks also got offense from junior Kat Scafidi (Hudson, N.H., 1-3) and senior Jackie Giannino (Beverly, Mass., 1-3).

The second game was a pitcher's duel, with both starters taking shutouts into the final inning. The Skyhawks strung together three of their six total hits in the top of the inning to score their only run of the game. Giannino singled in an effort to spearhead yet another late-inning comeback for the Hawks, but was left on base to end the game.

Sophomore Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) pitched well, allowing only six hits while walking none and striking out four in her complete-game effort.

The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, April 27 (3/5 p.m.) when they host a doubleheader against American International College at South Athletic Fields.
