Women's Ice Hockey Loses ECAC Open Title to Holy Cross In Overtime Shootout

S. BURLINGTON, VT (February 27, 2011) – Senior Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) and junior Nicola Garat (Princeton, NJ) each tallied a shootout goal to lead the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team to its third consecutive ECAC Open title Sunday afternoon in South Burlington, Vt. The game was tied tied 4-4, in overtime to force the shootout. The win earned Holy Cross the ECAC Open win. Saint Anselm wraps up the season with a record of 20-6-1. Holy Cross finishes their season at 17-9-1. Jocelyn Kratchmer from Holy Cross was named Tournament MVP. Kratchmer taking home MVP honors.

The Hawks picked up their first goal from Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, CA)  with assists from Michelle Conway (Medford, MA) and Bridget Sylvester (Randolph, NJ).  Holy Cross countered with a goal to tie the game on a shot by Nicola Grarat. The Crusaders took a  3-1 lead when Caroline English (Dorchester, MA) netted the third Holy Cross goal of the period at the 19:20 mark.

The Hawks pulled within one in the second period when Alex Hingston (Charlestown, MA), assisted by Sami Tatu (Waterford, MI) and Katherine Picarello (West Roxbury, MA) got the puck after two quick swing passes and fired it past the Crusader net minder on a power play. Sarah Ellins (Greeley, CO) goal, assisted by Angela Zevnik (and Katheryn Picarello ) tied the game at 3- 3.

Kratchmer put the Crusaders back on top in the eighth minute of the third period but Ellins come through for the Hawks again scoring a breakaway goal to tie the game with just 19 seconds to play.

After a scoreless overtime period,  a shootout was used to determine the champion. Garat, who scored the Crusaders' first goal of the evening, made the first shot, and after Saint Anselm's first miss, Kratchmer from Holy Corss scored. The Hawks couldn't find the net on their do-or-die attempt, making Holy Cross the winner in a 2-0 shootout. Amy Zappen stopped 29 shots for Saint Anselm in the contest.
