RUTLAND, VT (February 20, 2011) – Sophomore forward Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, FL) netted four goals to lead Saint Anselm over Castleton, 10-0 after a dissappointing loss at New England College on Friday.
The Hawks improve to 19-6-0 overall and 13-5-0 in the ECAC East. The Spartans fall to 5-17-2 (3-14-1).
Giarrusso gave Saint Anselm an early 1-0 advantage just 2:50 into the first period potting her 20th goal of the season past Hoy from the right side of the net. Senior forward Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) notched her team-leading 18th assist on the score.
Later in the period, Giarrusso made it 2-0 coming directly off the bench and converting a turnover at center ice into her second goal of the game. After stealing the puck from a Castleton forward at center ice, Giarrusso fed Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) on the right wing creating a 2-on-1 break. Ellins then carried the puck into the offensive zone and Giarrusso finished on a tape-to-tape pass in the slot for the score.
In the second, freshman forward Courtney Winters (Swampscott, MA) lit the lamp just 1:52 into the period driving home a drop pass in the slot from teammate Alexa Hingston (Charlestown, MA) past Hoy's stick side for a 3-0 lead.
Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, MA) pushed the advantage to 4-0 moments later at 3:56 sniping a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle into the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season. Giarrusso completed her hat-trick with a shorthanded goal at 5:48
stuffing home a rebound off of Ellins initial shot to push the gap to 5-0.
At 16:09, Winters buried a rebound behind Hoy for her second goal of the game and 17th of the season for a 6-0 lead and Giarrusso scored her fourth marker of the afternoon just seven seconds later with a breakaway goal off the faceoff.
Junior forward Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, CA) rounded out the six-goal second period chipping in a feed from junior defenseman Molly Corl (Danvers, MA) from the top of the blue line. The Hawks added two more goals in the third, both on the power play, from Corl and Andi Foss (Elko, MN) for the 10-0 win. Carley Berry (Danvers, MA) recorded her third shutout of the season turning away 14 shots in net. Hoy made 48 saves on 58 shots in between the pipes for the Spartans.
The Hawks will travel to Saint Michael's College for the ECAC Invitational February 26 and 27th.
