MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) recorded a hat trick to account for all three Hawks goals, but the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team fell to Salve Regina University by a 4-3 margin in overtime Friday evening at Saint George's Arena. With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 1-1 both overall and within the ECAC Women's East. The loss is the first of the season for the Hawks, who fall to 3-1 overall on the season and to 2-1 within the conference.
Only 59 seconds into overtime, Rachel Porter scored an unassisted goal to seal the victory for the Seahawks. Saint Anselm, who originally trailed by a 2-0 margin exiting the first period of play, rallied for two goals in the second stanza but entered the third period trailing 3-2. Winters' third goal of the game, assisted by Sami Tatu (Waterford, Mich.) was the lone tally for either side in the third period and forced the overtime period.
Winters potted two of her goals within 3:55, as she scored at 11:45 of the second period and at 15:40, with four different Hawks players collecting assists. Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisc.) and Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) added helpers on Winters' first goal, while Angela Zevnik (Greenfield, Wisc.) and Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) assisting the second Winters tally.
Molly Houston scored for Salve Regina at 6:54 of the first period to open the scoring. Michaela Chiuccariello potted the second goal of the period, unassisted, at 18:42 of the first period to grant the Seahawks a 2-0 lead. Taylor Shepherd scored late in the second period off of a Sarah Markey feed to account for the third regulation goal for the Seahawks.
Goaltender Rebecca Simmons turned aside 29-of-32 shots on net to collect her first victory of the season. Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) drew her first loss of the season, allowing four Seahawks strikes against 39 total shots on goal.
Saint Anselm converted two-of-five opportunities on the power play. Salve Regina was 1-for-10 with the extra skater on the evening.
