Hawks Power Play Overwhelms #10 Manhattanville 4-1

Manchester, NH (January 28) – Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, MA), Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, MA), and Courtney Winters (Swampscott, MA) each scored a power play goal, and the Hawks knocked off #10 Manhattanville 4-1 at Sullivan Arena Friday evening.  Saint Anselm's special teams were just as outstanding on the other end, holding the Valiants to just one goal on five power play opportunities of their own.

The win improves the Hawks to 14-4-0 overall and 8-3-0 in the ECAC Women's East.  It was also Saint Anselm's tenth win in their last eleven games.  The loss drops Manhattanville to 12-5-1 overall and 9-2-0 in the ECAC Women's East  Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, CA) picked up 18 saves for her ninth win of the season.  Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec) stopped 27 shots in the losing effort.

After a scoreless first period, the Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of power play goals from Byrne and Picarello.  Saint Anselm blew the game open in the third period.  Byrne picked up her second goal of the game at 7:35 thanks to a few beautiful moves.  She was sprung on a breakaway by Rosemarie Giarusso (Royal Palm Beach, FL), but beat a Valiant defender and Cote with a terrific tuck and drag move.

Saint Anselm made it 4-0 six minutes later with their third power play goal of the evening.  Winters beat Cote high to the glove side with a hard wrist shot.  Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, CT) added a late power play goal for Manhattanville to deny Zappen the shutout.

The Hawks return to the ice tomorrow afternoon for a 1pm game against Nichols College (3-14-0 overall, 2-9-0 ECAC Women's East).
