Joseph Earns 100th Career Win in Doubleheader Split

Worcester, Mass. (April 25) -- In game one at Assumption on Sunday afternoon, Saint Anselm took a 6-5 victory as Hawks sixth-year head coach Greg Joseph picked up his 100th career victory at Saint Anselm. The Hawks dropped game two by a 4-3 final as the Greyhounds won on a walkoff hit to earn the Northeast-10 doubleheader split.

Game One: Saint Anselm 6, Assumption 5
In the opening game, the two teams combined for five home runs, but it was the Hawks and junior Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine) who came out on top for the 6-5 win. The Greyhounds took a 5-3 lead heading into the seventh before Trafton hit a three-run homer with two outs to lift the Hawks to the one-run victory.

Assumption got on the board with a two-run homer by Bernadette Fuentes in the second and added to the lead with a solo homer to right in the third by Lauren Medeiros. Saint Anselm cut the lead down to one run by the fifth inning as junior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.) homered to left in the fourth and added an RBI single in the fifth for the 3-2 margin.

The Hawks continued the rally and after freshman Amanda Massad (Grafton, Mass.) singled to left with two outs in the sixth, freshman catcher Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.) tripled to right to tie the game at 3-3.

Assumption seemed poised for the win after Erin Murphy blasted a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the sixth and got the Hawks to record two quick outs to open the seventh inning. Junior Jackie Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) singled to right, followed by a pinch-hit single by sophomore Mary Fay (Stoughton, Mass.) to set the stage for Trafton's heroics. Trafton lifted her second home run of the season over the left field fence for the 6-5 comeback win.

Freshman starter Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) went five innings for the Hawks, scattering five hits and allowing four earned runs before giving way to senior Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) in relief. Lemire pitched two innings of two-hit relief to improve to 8-7 overall. Chelsea Durso took the loss in relief for the Greyhounds, dropping to 2-9 after allowing four earned runs and six hits in just 2.2 innings pitched.

Game Two: Assumption 4, Saint Anselm 3
After the game being tied at 3-3 after three innings, both teams were quiet until the bottom of the seventh when Assumption came away with the walkoff, 4-3 win to earn the split of the doubleheader.

Assumption took an early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double to left by Medeiros, but the Hawks answered in the second on a two-out, two-run homer by Galavotti to give Saint Anselm a 2-1 lead. The Hawks added to that lead in the third after senior Moira McCabe (Brookline, N.H.) led off with a single to left and came home on an RBI single to right by Trafton.

In the bottom of the third, Brenna Morrissey had a leadoff single for the Greyhounds and scored on a two-out, two-run homer to left by Ashley Bilodeau to knot things at 3-3. Neither team found the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh when Morrissey led off with a single to center to get things going. After she was sacrificed to second, Medeiros roped an RBI single to center to lift the Greyhounds to the victory.

Senior Lisa Caruso (Granby, Conn.) went three innings for the Hawks as the starter, allowing six hits and three earned runs in the start. Lemire pitched 3.1 innings of relief though and took the loss, dropping to 8-8 on the season. Durso improved to 3-9 for Assumption, throwing 4.2 innings of one-hit relief to preserve the victory.

Saint Anselm now sits at 17-21 overall and 10-14 in the Northeast-10, while Assumption is now 20-16 overall and 14-10 in the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday, April 27th as the Hawks travel to Stonehill for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader in Easton, Mass.
