MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Adelphi University
Panthers, who have been ranked No. 1 in the nation since the start
of the season, extended their two-season win streak to 30 games
this morning in a 24-2 rout of the Saint Anselm women's
lacrosse team at Larkin Field on the campus of Southern New
Hampshire University. The Panthers have now won 49
consecutive regular-season games, dating back to 2007, and hang
onto their number one spot in the NE-10 with a 12-0 (9-0 NE-10)
record. The loss drops the Hawks to 4-6 (2-5 NE-10).
Claire Petersen, who led the Panthers with five
goals and seven assists, opened the scoring just 19 seconds after
the opening draw control with an unassisted goal. She scored
two more quick goals for the Panthers to make it 3-0 after the
first five minutes of play. As of last Sunday, Peterson led the
country in assists per game (3.8) and was seventh in the nation in
points per game (5.5).
The Panthers ran the score to 7-0 before Britini Hickman
(Farmington, N.H.) passed the ball through four defenders
to Leigh Krzyston (Bedford, N.H.) in front of the
net, who roped it in for the Hawks' first goal of the
game. Adelphi's offense continued to shine, soaring to
a 15-1 lead at the half.
Early in the second half, senior Katie O'Brien
(Peabody, Mass.) took the ball the length of the field on
a successful clear and found a hole in the Panther's defense,
netting an unassisted goal for the Hawks at 24:32. The goal
was the first of the four-year defender's career, shortly
after she notched her first career point with an assist at
Merrimack on April 3.
Despite a 13-save appearance by Hawk goalkeeper
Katherine O'Hara (Norwell, Mass.), who leads
the nation in saves per game, averaging 14.0, the Hawks eventually
fell to the Panthers by a score of 24-2. Panther starter
Caitlin Fitzpatrick made three saves and allowed
both goals in the first 54:26 minutes of play.
Cathryn Bonitz did not see a shot in her 5:34
minutes in relief.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 20, when they host
the Falcons of Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference
competition beginning at 4:00 pm.
