Lions Pull Ahead Late in 15-8 Final

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The Saint Anselm women's lacrosse team travelled to Rockville Centre, N.Y., this afternoon to take on the Molloy College Lions.  While the play was evenly-matched for a majority of the game, a 6-0 run for Molloy at the beginning of the second half put the Lions ahead, giving the Hawks their first loss of the season by a score of 15-8.  The win lifts the Lions to 1-0 (0-0 ECC), while the Hawks fall to 1-1 (0-0 NE-10).

Freshman Lauren Alfis (Hanover, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Hawks a 24:33 in the first period on a free position shot.  Kerianne Steine replied with a goal for the Lions at 21:21.  Tia Karon (Medford, Mass.) put the Hawks up 2-1 at 20:36, but Kristie Sosnowski tied it at 12:54.  Leigh Krzyston (Bedford, N.H.) put the Hawks up 3-2 at 8:26, but Rebecca LaFlare tied the game once again just 14 seconds later, for a score of 3-3 at the half.

Rebecca LaFlare and Lori Sollitto combined to score five unanswered goals for the Lions in the first 11 minutes of the second half to take the lead for the first time, putting the Lions up 8-3 at the 19-minute mark, and the Hawks were unable to recover.  The rest of the game was back-and-forth much like the first half, but the six-goal run gave the Lions the advantage, taking the win in a 15-8 final.

Lori Sollitto led both teams in scoring, netting six goals and an assist for seven points in the game.  Rebecca LaFlare knocked in four more goals for the Lions, and Kerianne Steine and Kristie Sosnowski both scored two.   Kaitlynn Kelly scored the remaining goal for the Lions, and Hayley Lacey had three assists.

Hawks Meghan Smith (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Tia Karon each scored two goals for the Hawks, and  Leigh Krzyston, Lauren Alfis, Carrie Brophy (Mansfield, Mass.) and Emily Traicoff (Beverly, Mass.) netted a goal apiece.  The Lions outshot the Hawks 62-21, but the Hawks were more accurate, putting 16 on goal for .761 percent compared to the Lions' 44 (.710).  Hawk goalkeeper Katherine O'Hara (Norwell, Mass.) made 29 saves in the game for a .659 save percentage, while Jackie Bove was just .500, stopping eight of 16.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Philadelphia University on the campus of Drexel University for a nonconference matchup beginning at 1:00 pm.
