ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The Saint Anselm
women's lacrosse team travelled to Rockville Centre, N.Y., this
afternoon to take on the Molloy College Lions. While the play
was evenly-matched for a majority of the game, a 6-0 run for Molloy
at the beginning of the second half put the Lions ahead, giving the
Hawks their first loss of the season by a score of 15-8. The
win lifts the Lions to 1-0 (0-0 ECC), while the Hawks fall to 1-1
(0-0 NE-10).
Freshman Lauren Alfis (Hanover, Mass.) opened
the scoring for the Hawks a 24:33 in the first period on a free
position shot. Kerianne Steine replied with
a goal for the Lions at 21:21. Tia Karon (Medford,
Mass.) put the Hawks up 2-1 at 20:36, but Kristie
Sosnowski tied it at 12:54. Leigh Krzyston
(Bedford, N.H.) put the Hawks up 3-2 at 8:26, but
Rebecca LaFlare tied the game once again just 14
seconds later, for a score of 3-3 at the half.
Rebecca LaFlare and Lori Sollitto combined to
score five unanswered goals for the Lions in the first 11 minutes
of the second half to take the lead for the first time, putting the
Lions up 8-3 at the 19-minute mark, and the Hawks were unable to
recover. The rest of the game was back-and-forth much like
the first half, but the six-goal run gave the Lions the advantage,
taking the win in a 15-8 final.
Lori Sollitto led both teams in scoring, netting six goals and
an assist for seven points in the game. Rebecca LaFlare
knocked in four more goals for the Lions, and Kerianne Steine and
Kristie Sosnowski both scored two. Kaitlynn
Kelly scored the remaining goal for the Lions, and
Hayley Lacey had three assists.
Hawks Meghan Smith (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Tia
Karon each scored two goals for the Hawks, and Leigh
Krzyston, Lauren Alfis, Carrie Brophy (Mansfield,
Mass.) and Emily Traicoff (Beverly,
Mass.) netted a goal apiece. The Lions outshot the
Hawks 62-21, but the Hawks were more accurate, putting 16 on goal
for .761 percent compared to the Lions' 44 (.710). Hawk
goalkeeper Katherine O'Hara (Norwell, Mass.) made
29 saves in the game for a .659 save percentage, while
Jackie Bove was just .500, stopping eight of 16.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on
Philadelphia University on the campus of Drexel University for a
nonconference matchup beginning at 1:00 pm.
