Griffin Lifts Hawks Past Purple Knights in Overtime

Manchester, N.H. (October 19) – In the final minutes of the first overtime period, Saint Anselm senior Sara Griffin (Derry, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal to lift the Hawks to a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over visiting Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 field hockey action on a brisk Tuesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, Saint Anselm got on the board just 3:15 into the second as Elizabeth Sears (Danvers, Mass.) tallied her second goal of the season, assisted by Griffin. The Purple Knights answered back moments later on a goal from Megan Hill (Guilford, Conn.) to tie things at 1-1. Senior Natalie Elvidge (Newton, N.J.) assisted on the goal, her first assist of the season.

The two teams stayed tied at 1-1 for the rest of regulation, with the Hawks holding a 15-2 edge in shots on goal during the first two periods.

With just over a minute left in the first overtime period, the Hawks took the ball from midfield and after a scramble, sophomore Kristina Katsikis (Hanover, Mass.) crossed the ball to Griffin, who scored her team-leading third goal of the season as she hammered the shot into the left side of the net.

Saint Anselm sophomore goalie Megan Sullivan (Braintree, Mass.) turned aside one shot in the win, while Saint Michael's junior Jackie Stacey (West Windsor, Vt.) made 17 saves.

With the win, Saint Anselm improves to 2-9 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Michael's falls to 2-10 and 0-4 in the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on October 23 as the Hawks host Stonehill on Saturday afternoon for a Noon start. Prior to the game, Saint Anselm will honor seniors Sara Griffin, Annie Heaney, Ellen O'Neil and Bradi True.
