Pleasantville, N.Y. (April 21) -- Led by a
complete-game shutout by junior pitcher Megan Lemire
(Worcester, Mass.), the Saint Anselm softball team earned
a split with Pace University on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10
Conference action. The Hawks took game one by a 2-0 final before
dropping the second, 9-3.
In game one, the Hawks got all the offense they would need in
the third inning as the visitors took advantage of two Pace errors
in the frame. A single to center by senior Katherine
Theodorou (Glen Cove, N.Y.) scored Brittany Birch
(Bradford, Mass.) and Kayla McEachern (Stoneham,
Mass.) with unearned runs for the win. Lemire, who
scattered nine hits during the game, allowed only four base runners
past second to improve to 10-9 on the season. Theodorou and
Raylyn Glavin (Saugus, Mass.) each finished the
game with two hits.
In the second game, Pace jumped out to a 7-0 lead after just
three innings before the Hawks got on the board with two runs in
the top of the fourth. Jackie Giannino (Beverly,
Mass.) led off the inning with a triple and came home on a
fielding error by the shortstop in the next at-bat. McEachern
scored her second run of the afternoon later in the inning on a
sacrifice fly to left by senior Julie Beaudry (Worcester,
Mass.). The Hawks added a single run in the fifth on an
RBI double to left by Giannino that scored Theodorou, but got no
closer as the team split its fourth straight doubleheader.
Lisa Caruso (Granby, Conn.) took the loss to fall
to 2-5 on the season, giving up seven earned runs in 2.2 innings.
Glavin, Birch and Giannino also finished with multiple hits in
the second game.
With the split, the Hawks are now 16-21-1 overall and 8-13-1 in
the Northeast-10 and return to action on Wednesday afternoon as the
team travels to Saint Michael's for a doublheader.
