Manchester, N.H. (November 2) -- Leading 3-1
heading into the third period, the Saint Anselm women's ice hockey
team exploded for six third-period goals in a 9-1 win over Salve
Regina in the season opener. Junior forward Kelsey Johnson
(Byfield, Mass.) led the Hawks with a hat trick as
the team owned a 54-11 advantage in total shots. ECAC East Player
of the Year Kathleen Twomey (Londonderry,
N.H.) also finished with two goals and two assists.
Twomey scored just 1:25 into the contest, assisted by
Bianca DeSantis (Georgetown, Mass.), to give the
Hawks the early 1-0 lead. Kristen Byrne (Duxbury,
Mass.) gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead when she buried a
Tiea Kurlowecz (Concord, Mass.) pass at the
17:25 mark and the Hawks went into the first intermission with the
2-0 lead.
Salve Regina cut the lead in half 16:56 into the second period
when Gabriella Gardner (Farmington Hills, Mich.)
scored on the power play, assisted by Caitlin Campbell
(Hingham, Mass.) and Alex Riewer (Lake Bluff,
Ill.). Just over two minutes later, the Hawks
took advantage of a five-on-three, with Chelsea Fillingim
(Fairbanks, Alaska) scoring at the 19:08 mark, assisted by
Twomey. The Hawks took the 3-1 lead going into the
third period.
The Hawks opened up scoring in the final period with six
third-period goals. Johnson's goals were assisted by
Cindy Lebel (Greenville, Maine), Alexa
Hingston (Charlestown, Mass.), and Arianna Rigano
(Malden, Mass.), respectively. DeSantis, Twomey, and Lebel
picked up the other three Hawk goals.
The Hawks return to the ice on November 17, taking on
Manhattanville at 3:00 at Sullivan Arena. The Hawks improve to
1-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 ECAC East, while Salve Regina drops to 0-1-0
overall, 0-1-0 in league play.
