Lowell, Mass. (October 27) - The field hockey
team fell to second-seeded Bentley, 2-0, in the Northeast-10
Tournament semifinals at UMass Lowell's Cushing Field on a dreary
Saturday afternoon. The loss marks the end of Saint Anselm's
historic season, while Bentley advances to the Northeast-10 finals
to face off against first-seeded UMass Lowell, Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
at UMass Lowell's Cushing Field.
The Hawks and Falcons played to a scoreless first half, with few
scoring chances for both teams. Sophomore goaltender Riley
Haddock (Falmouth, Maine) turned aside three shots for the
Hawks, while Bentley's Alyssa Sliney (Brewster,
Mass.) went uncontested through the first half. Bentley
held the advantage in penalty corners five to one, but neither team
converted on any penalty corners.
After another 20 minutes of scoreless play into the second half,
Bentley broke the scoreless tie on a penalty stroke by
Courtney Bartlett (Brunswick, Maine) at the 55:24
mark. After Haddock made the initial save, Bartlett shot what
appeared to be a goal, but the ball struck a Hawks' defender,
awarding Bentley a penalty stroke. Bartlett converted, giving the
Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Heather Buda (East Kingston, N.H.) scored the
Falcons' second goal at the 65:05 mark, assisted by Bartlett,
sealing the 2-0 victory for Bentley.
Riley Haddock posted seven saves in the loss.
Despite falling in the Northeast-10 playoffs, the field hockey
team notched its first-ever Northeast-10 Tournament Final Four
appearance.
