Manchester, N.H. (October 15) -- Led by two
goals from junior Laura Urko (Attleboro, Mass.),
the Saint Anselm field hockey team upset No. 7 Bryant by a 3-0
final on Tuesday afternoon's Senior Day. Senior co-captain
Michele Baca (Franklin, N.H.), playing in her
final career home game, was honored prior to the start of the game.
Urko tallied her third goal of the season at the 24:18 mark,
assisted on by Lauren Chooljian (Hampstead, N.H.),
for the early 1-0 Saint Anselm lead. Less than four minutes
later Urko struck again on an unassisted score and the Hawks took a
2-0 lead into halftime.
The Hawk defense held off a hungry Bryant team in the second
half as the Bulldogs had an amazing 15 penalty corners attempts
thwarted by the Hawks. Overall in the game, the visitors held a
25-6 edge in that category. Saint Anselm had the last scoring
chance on a penalty corner and made it count as sophomore
Maddie Cantarow (Norwood, Mass.) scored her second
goal of the season with no time remaining on the clock to account
for the 3-0 final.
Sophomore Riley Haddock (Falmouth, Maine) made
five saves in the biggest win of her career, while Kundayi
Mawema turned aside six shots in the loss.
Saint Anselm improves to 7-9 overall and 7-8 in the
Northeast-10, while the Bulldogs fall to 12-6 overall and 12-3 in
league play. Saint Anselm closes out the regular season on Sunday
afternoon as the Hawks travel to American International for a 3
p.m. start. That game will take place in Springfield, Mass., at the
Springfield College campus. The Hawks remain in the Northeast-10
Tournament hunt and will learn their tournament fate following the
end of the regular season.
