Toy, Flanagan lead women's cross country at Shacklette Invite

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Christine Toy (Standish, Maine) of the Saint Anselm College women's cross country team set the pace for the Hawks on Saturday as the team competed in the 38th annual Phillip J. Shacklette Invitational on campus.

As a team, the Hawks finished second with 31 total points, trailing the race-winning Penmen from Southern New Hampshire University by only three points. Saint Michael's College rounded out the three-team field with 74 points.

Toy finished third in the field of 43 runners with a 5K time of 19:41.5. Freshman Delaney Flanagan (Bedford, N.H.), also competing in her first collegiate race, crossed the line in 19:41.5. Sophomore Dominique Engle (Rutland, Mass.) was the fifth-place point getter in the race, turning in a time of 20:30.85.

Sophomore Samantha Matthews (Groveland, Mass.) and junior captain Emily Ryan (Woburn, Mass.) rounded out the Hawks point scorers with times of 21:04.37 and 21:06.31, respectively. For Ryan, it was a personal record on a 5K course.

Sophomores Catie Callinan (Litchfield, N.H.), Holly O'Leary (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Ellen Duane (Braintree, Mass.) all finished in the top-15, recording sub 21:30 times for Saint Anselm. Senior Maq Dimastrantonio (Shapleigh, Maine) was 16th with a time of 21:33.03 with sophomores Leanne Guimond (Barnstable, Mass.) and Lia Guerette (Ellington, Conn.) finishing in the top 20 (21:35.61, 21:39.94).

Ashley Corcoran from Southern New Hampshire recorded a time of 19:01.24 to claim the individual championship. Grace Henson captured second place for the Penmen with a time of 19:38.59. Freshman Margaret Burnham led Saint Michael's with a time of 20:56.34, placing ninth.

Saint Anselm returns to action Saturday, Sept. 21 at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. The women's race will begin at high noon.
