SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team blanked the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College, 6-0, in New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) play on Friday night.
The Hawks improve to 7-3 on the year and to 6-3 against NEWHA opponents. The Purple Knights own matching 2-5 records in overall and alliance play. Saint Anselm goes head-to-head again with Saint Michael's on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. in Vermont.
Junior Katy Meehan (Quincy, Mass.) and senior Kaley Campbell (Colchester, Vt.) netted two goals each in the Hawks victory. Senior Amanda Conger (Swanton, Vt.) assisted on a team-high two tallies. Campbell ended the day with 31 career goals while Meehan posted her 37th career goal.
Following 10 minutes of scoreless action, the Hawks struck first as Meehan sent a one timer into the back of the net to give Saint Anselm a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, senior Megan Klaus (State College, Pa.) kept the scoring going, redirecting the puck in front of the net and burying the power-play goal. Off a rebounded shot, Meehan scored at 19:37, helping the Hawks to a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Only 43 seconds into the second period, Campbell buried a one timer from a quick dish by Conger for her first tally of the game. The Purple Knights kept the Hawks scoreless for the remainder of the second stanza.
Campbell continued her goal scoring with her second of the day at 13:34. Campbell converted on a two-on-one opportunity, firing a shot into the top right corner of the net. Sophomore Erin Meyers (Saint Paul, Minn.) chipped in the offense with a tally of her own a minute later which helped the Hawks earn the shutout victory.
Junior Kia Castonguay (Ipswich, Mass.) earned her first career shutout, stopping 16 shots. Castonguay's counterpart, Vika Simons of Saint Michael's, totaled 49 saves. Saint Anselm finished with a 49-16 shots advantage.
