Women's basketball stings American Int'l, 69-47

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team posted a 69-47 victory over the host Yellow Jackets from American International College on Tuesday.

Saint Anselm improves to 10-4 overall on the season and to 6-2 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. American International falls to 5-12 on the campaign, having lost seven of its nine league tilts this season.

Senior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) posted her 12th double-double of the season, finishing with a game-high 25 points alongside 15 rebounds in 31 minutes of game play. She also eclipsed 1,450 career points and 900 rebounds in the contest – she entered play ranked second in NCAA Division II in rebounds per game (14.2) and third in points per game (23.1).

Junior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) also produced a double-double, tallying 18 points alongside 15 rebounds and two steals. Classmate Jenoyce Laniyan (Bedford, N.H.) logged five points with as many rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench and junior Grace Guachione (Pittsfield, Mass.) led the team with three steals.

The Yellow Jackets opened up a seven point lead over the Hawks with 8:29 to go in the first half. Exiting the first quarter, the Hawks had committed eight miscues and shot under 40% from the floor before turning things around late in the half. In total, the Hawks went on a 17-6 scoring run to carry a four-point lead, 31-27, into halftime.

Saint Anselm overwhelmed the hosts to begin the second half, using a 22-6 stretch to build a 20-point advantage, 53-33. Steinman recorded eight points with seven rebounds just in the third quarter alone as a swarming Hawks defense limited American International to only three made field goals and six total points.

The Hawks closed the game strong, building a game-high lead of 26 points following a Ryan three-point play. In total, Saint Anselm shot just under 50% for the day and owned the game's rebounding advantage, 48-to-31. American International could not take advantage of 27 turnovers for Saint Anselm, scoring only 10 points off of Hawks miscues.

Kayla Robinson led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points.

Saint Anselm returns to action Saturday, Jan. 18, hosting Adelphi at 1:30 p.m. in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
