SHELTON, Conn. – Trailing 2-1 heading into the third period, the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team went on a late charge and recorded a 3-2 victory over the Eagles of Post University on Saturday night.
Thanks to junior Matt Chisholm (Scituate, Mass.) and his eventual game-winning tally, the Hawks earned their third Northeast-10 Conference win of the season against first-year associate member of the conference, Post, and improve to 4-3-1 on the early year. The host Eagles suffered their fourth loss of the 2019-20 campaign and drop to 2-4-1 overall and 0-4-0 in NE10 play.
The Eagles struck first as Evan Lugo scored at 8:08 of the first period on a power-play opportunity, giving the hosts an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) of the Hawks answered with a tally of his own at 12:50 to notch the game at one, logging the first goal of his young career. The tie game would remain until midway through the second period.
Post's Lucas Smith broke open the Eagles lead at 9:21 which provided the hosts a 2-1 lead. After 14 minutes of scoreless action in the third period, junior John Femia (Canton, Mass.) scored the equalizer for the Hawks at 14:35. A minute later, Chisholm would score the eventual game-winner with his 12th career goal.
Sophomore Michal Soustal (Unicov, Czech Republic) posted 27 saves, earning his first victory of the season. Post's Brandon Brown had 39 saves of his own in the contest. Saint Anselm closed the contest with a 39-27 shots advantage.
The Hawks will travel to UMass Dartmouth on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7:20 p.m. before hosting six straight games at Sullivan Arena.
