MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team defeated the visiting Worcester State University Lancers, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon in a non-league matchup at Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks earned their first triumph of the 2019-20 season, improving to 1-1. The Lancers hold an identical 1-1 mark on the year.
Following a scoreless first period, senior Ryan Spillane (Franklin, Mass.) put Saint Anselm ahead 19 seconds into the second stanza with a goal set up by senior Dave Almeida (Bristol, R.I.) and junior John Femia (Canton, Mass.).
The Lancers countered with a Will Ahearn goal at 11:52 of the second period from a Kevin Drevitch pass, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Hawks took their second lead of the game a minute later with a freshman Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.) tally at 12:43, the first of his career.
Worcester State attempted to mount a comeback at 10:58 as Nick Pennucci found the back of the net on a power-play opportunity.
Freshman Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) added the final tally for the Hawks with a goal at 18:28 of the third, helping the Hawks to a 4-2 win.
In his collegiate debut, freshman netminder Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) made 17 saves, yielding just two goals in picking up the first win of his career. Ryan Hoff of the Lancers stopped 25-of-29 shots faced, suffering the loss.
The Hawks travel to Babson on Friday, Nov. 8 for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup before Saint Anselm begins Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, Nov. 9 as they host Saint Michael's.
