WATERTOWN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College men's golf team carded a second-day 313 on the way to a 13th place finish at the Post University Invitational on Tuesday.
The Hawks shot 337 on the first day of competition and improved by 24 strokes on the final round of the two-day tournament. Saint Anselm will conclude its fall season at the two-day Le Moyne Invitational starting on Friday, Oct. 18 at the Lake Shore Yacht & Country Club in Cicero, N.Y.
Junior Alec Brunelle (Salem, N.H.) led the Hawks with a one-over 72, finishing in a tie for 29th place. He was three-over through five holes before closing the front nine with four straight pars, posting a three-over 38. Making the turn, Brunelle fired two birdies in the opening two holes. He then closed the back nine with seven straight pars and carded a team-low two-under 34.
Sophomore Will Strauss (Duxbury, Mass.) earned a final-round seven-over 78 which put him in a tie for 65th. After recording two bogeys on the first six holes, Strauss responded with two straight birdies on his seventh and eighth holes. Strauss would drop two strokes on his ninth hole to earn a front nine two-over 37. He finished the day with a five-over 41 on the back nine.
After a first-round tally of 96, freshman Jack Mang (Needham, Mass.) rebounded and carded a career-low eight-over 79 to finish in 85th place. Mang began his second day with a five-over 40 opening nine before posting a three-over 39 on the back nine.
Brunelle concluded the tournament with a two-under on the par-five's. He also led the team in total birdies throughout the event with five.
Assumption topped the field of 15 teams, leading the way with tournament champion Mark Bryant who scored a one-under 141 across two days.
