MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) of the nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College men's basketball team logged 31 points to propel the Hawks to a 93-72 victory over Saint Michael's College on Wednesday.
The Hawks, ranked as low as 12th in NCAA Division II by D2SIDA, improve to 3-0 overall on the year and to 1-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Saint Michael's drops to 2-1 on the season, losing its NE10 opener.
Arbuckle finished with a game-high 31 points, becoming the first freshman for Saint Anselm to eclipse 30 points in a contest since Roy Mabrey '15 logged 32 points at home against Bentley on Nov. 27, 2011. He poured home six three-point baskets and also secured six rebounds and had three assists in his home Hawks debut.
Four others reached double-digit point scoring totals for Saint Anselm, including junior Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Senior Danny Evans (Leeds, United Kingdom) pulled down 14 points with seven rebounds, four blocks and two steals with sophomore Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) responsible for a game-high six assists with 14 points to his credit.
Junior Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark) posted 10 points in 20 minutes of work, tallying four rebounds and three assists. The Hawks finished the game with distinct advantages in shooting percentage (49.2%-to-40.7%), assists (18-to-7), rebounds (41-to-36) and turnovers, committing only nine miscues while forcing the opponent into 18.
Saint Michael's captured a game-best nine point advantage with 11:51 to go in the opening half, leading 22-13 after a 14-point scoring run by the guests. Saint Anselm responded with great strength, scoring 10 of the game's next 24 points to create a seven-point lead, 33-26, with 5:57 to go before halftime.
The Purple Knights pulled to within one point, 37-36, with 96 seconds left in the first half, but the Hawks recreated a double-digit lead early in the second half. Near the midpoint of the second half, the Hawks used a 25-11 scoring run to go ahead by a 79-58 score with 6:17 to go. Saint Anselm would keep the guests at arm's length down the stretch, exiting play with a 21-point victory.
Eli DiGrande had 21 points off the bench, followed by Jordan Guzman and his 16 points. Thomas Jackson III picked up 12 of his team's 36 rebounds.
The Hawks head to Bloomfield on Wednesday, Nov. 20 for a 7 p.m. contest. Saint Anselm returns home on Saturday, Nov. 23 for a 3:30 p.m. tilt with Franklin Pierce.
