RINDGE, N.H. – Sophomore Carly LaCasse (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) of the nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team scored only 49 seconds into Thursday's contest, sending the Hawks to a 1-0 victory over Franklin Pierce University at Sodexo Field.
Saint Anselm, ranked sixth in NCAA Division II by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, improves to 1-0 overall on the season while the Ravens drop to 0-1. The Hawks have now won nine consecutive games over the Ravens, including a matching 1-0 victory over Franklin Pierce to end the latter's 2018 season.
LaCasse's quick strike came off a left-to-right cross from senior Michelle Lemelin (Chelsea, Maine) that was put home just inside the right post. The sophomore has now scored in back-to-back season openers for the Hawks, having notched her first collegiate point in her debut at Bellarmine on Aug. 31, 2018.
Saint Anselm exited the first half of play with a 6-to-1 advantage in shots taken, including five alone in the second quarter. The Hawks finished the game with a decisive 11-to-2 edge and were granted five of the game's six penalty corners.
Junior Julia Hand (Reading, Mass.) did not face a shot, earning the victory in goal with her 10th career shutout. Olivia Barnes halted four-of-five shots, allowing only LaCasse's goal in the first minute. Jessica Strassburg logged a defensive save for the Ravens.
Saint Anselm heads to Bentley for a 7 p.m. non-conference game on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Northeast-10 Conference play begins for the Hawks on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Adelphi with a game time of 11 a.m.
