SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Freshman QB Yianni Gavalas (Manhasset, N.Y.) of the Saint Anselm College football team was selected as the Division II/III winner of the Ray Gallant Insurance New England Football Writers' Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Award for week 11, NEFWA announced Tuesday evening. Gavalas will receive his award Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. at the weekly New England Football Writers' Luncheon at Dillon Field House on the campus of Harvard University.
Gavalas, who was named the Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week on Monday for the second straight week, picked apart the Pace University defense in a 63-33 win against the Setters on Saturday afternoon in just the third start of his young career. Gavalas completed 28 of 30 passes (93.3%) to shatter the school's single-game completion percentage mark of 80 percent (16-of-20). He also threw for 316 yards and six touchdowns (one shy of the school record), while not tossing an interception to pace an offense that did not turn the ball over all day en route to setting program records for points and touchdowns in a game.
In his three starts, Gavalas has connected on 90 of 123 passes (73.2%) for 1,155 yards to go along with 11 touchdowns and just four interceptions, three of which came in his first start and the other occurred on a hail mary to close the Nov. 1 game against LIU Post.
The ninth-seeded Hawks will close out their season with a Northeast-10 Championship Weekend tilt at sixth-seeded Bentley on Saturday, Nov. 16 at noon.
