Saint Anselm sophomore quarterback Michael Pierce (Andover, Mass.) has been named as the D2Football.com National Offensive Player of the Week, the first Saint Anselm player to earn the award. Pierce also won his third career Gold Helmet Award on Wednesday, presented by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.
Named as the Northeast-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career earlier this week, Pierce threw for a school-record 408 yards in a 45-35 win over Pace on Saturday. Pierce has now won the Gold Helmet Award three times in just 14 career games and is the first three-time winner of the award in Saint Anselm history.
Pierce, who completed 24-of-37 pass attempts while breaking his own school record of 396 yards passing, surpassed the 400-yard mark late in the fourth quarter. He found Marc Wilson (Farmington, Conn.) for scoring strikes of 11 and 35 yards, along with a 56-yard bomb to Marcel Bouie (Stone Mountain, Ga.). Pierce also added 42 yards on the ground to give him 450 yards of total offense in the game. That mark is second on the Saint Anselm single-game list, trailing the 496 yards that Pierce gained in a 31-28 loss at Stonehill in 2009. The 408 passing yards and the 450 yards of total offense are both single-game highs in the Northeast-10 this season.
Pierce, who was a two-time winner of the Gold Helmet Award as a freshman, was a Northeast-10 All-Rookie selection in 2009 as he has set every Saint Anselm passing record over his first 14 games wearing the Blue and White.
Pierce and the Hawks are back in action as the team travels to Merrimack on Saturday, October 2nd to take on the Warriors beginning at 1 p.m. at Warrior Field.
