MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team served up 17 aces on the evening, including five from Sarah Lowery, as the Hawks took down Assumption College 3-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action Tuesday evening at Stoutenburgh Gym.
The 17 aces in a four-set match is the second-most by Saint Anselm in a four-set match since 2002.
The Hawks (10-1, 2-0 NE-10) bounded out to an early 2-0 lead on the Greyhounds (2-9, 1-3 NE-10), securing 25-14 and 25-9 victories in the first two sets.
In the third, a Zara Valez kill gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the set at 21-19. Tied later at 21-21, the Hounds rattled off three-straight points to take a 24-21 lead. A late kill by Katy Teets was not enough as Kiki Romanik sealed the set victory for Assumption, 25-22.
Trailing 7-5 in the fourth, the Hawks went on an 8-1 run and scored 12 of the next 14 points to build a 17-9 lead, from which the Hounds could not recover. Saint Anselm cruised the rest of the way to the victory, 25-17.
Teets led the way with 11 kills on the evening for Saint Anselm, while Amanda Williams tallied eight and Amanda Bickford chipped in with five. Jewel Hays tallied 28 assists ,while Riley Grussing added nine in limited work. CC Chrisom led the way defensively with 17 digs.
Six players tallied five or more kills for the Greyhounds, with Julia Goyette and Velez collecting six each. The Hawks' defense held the Hounds to just .067 hitting on the evening including a -.238 mark in the second set.
Saint Anselm returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 with a pair of matches at American International College in Springfield, Mass. The Hawks take on host AIC in a NE-10 match-up at 12 p.m. and then Mercy College at 2 p.m.
