WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team was edged 2-1 on the road by regionally-ranked Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday evening at Multi-Sport Stadium.
Saint Anselm (3-6-0, 1-6-0 NE10) and Assumption (6-1-1, 4-1-1 NE10) exchanged goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and the score remained tied until Sammy Ferrera scored the game-winner in the 78th minute for the Greyhounds. The Hawks hit the frame of the goal three times throughout the 90 minutes as they came out on the wrong end of a one-goal game. Assumption was ranked No. 6 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches East Region rankings.
In the first half, the teams traded goals just 2:35 apart inside the opening 10 minutes. In the seventh minute, Corey Murray gave Saint Anselm the lead with her team-high fourth goal of the season. The junior collected a blocked Suzanne Cotter shot near the penalty spot and slotted the ball into the lower-left corner to open the scoring.
The lead did not last long for Saint Anselm, as Kallie Villemaire, the nation's leading scorer in Division II, ran onto a long ball by Ania Spina in the ninth minute and finished a breakaway past an advancing Elise Bouchard. The goal was the 13th of the season for the junior, who has scored in seven of eight games this season for the Greyhounds.
The teams combined to hit the woodwork three times in the remainder of the first half. In the 17th minute, Nicole Scarfo turned a Micaela Pitts corner onto the crossbar from the edge of the six-yard box. Six minutes later, Jessica FitzGerald's cross from the right wing hit the bar and Bouchard made a save down low on Johnna Caporuscio on the follow-up.
With 15 minutes remaining in the opening half, Caly Farina beat her defender on the left wing and sent in a cross that found Jessica Kaufman at the far post, but the senior's shot came back off the inside of the post and was cleared off the line.
There were fewer chances for both sides in the second half. Alexis Elowitch had the first chance of the half, firing straight at Alexis Nason from 20 yards out in the 52nd minute. FitzGerald blazed one over from the right side of the box 15 minutes later for Assumption.
In the 77th minute, Ferrera provided the game-winner for the Greyhounds, firing the ball into an open net after a loose ball in the box found its way to Ferrera. Saint Anselm came inches away from an equalizer in the 82nd minute, when Lauren Case blasted a shot square off the crossbar from 25-plus yards out after a corner was cleared out of the box.
Bouchard made four saves in the game for Saint Anselm but took the loss. Nason earned the win for Assumption with a five-save night. Shots in the game finished 13-11 in favor of the Greyhounds.
Saint Anselm returns home to take on Le Moyne on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. at Melucci Field.
