#14 Women’s Lax Claims No. 3 Seed With 20-3 Romp Over So. Connecticut
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Kelly Pickett (Chelmsford, Mass.) registered a game-high six points and junior Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.) each added five to lead the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team to Saturday afternoon's 20-3 victory against Southern Connecticut State University in the regular-season finale on Senior Day at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks improve to 12-3 on the season, including 9-3 in Northeast-10 play to clinch the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship. The 12 victories add to an already-program record after the Hawks won 10 games a year ago. Saint Anselm finished in a three-way tie with Stonehill College and Le Moyne College, but held the tiebreaker in goal differential after all three teams featured a 1-1 record against each other. The Hawks, who earn their second straight playoff appearance after missing out on a berth since 2006, will play host to sixth-seeded Bentley University at Grappone on Wednesday, April 30 at 4 p.m. The Owls wrap up their season at 4-13, 1-11 NE-10.
Pickett scored five goals and handed out an assist, while Daly and Villareal both potted four goals and collected a helper. Junior Kaitlyn Stazinski (Pembroke, Mass.) recorded four points on three goals and an assist, with sophomore Erin Marshall (Woburn, Mass.) chipping in two goals and a pair of assists.
Pickett set up Marshall to kick off the scoring 3:42 into the contest before Emily Horan knotted things up just 1:04 later. Stazinski answered just 14 seconds after that to give Saint Anselm the lead for good at 2-1 with 25:00 remaining in the opening half. Daly scored her first from Stazinski just 23 seconds later and added another off an assist from classmate Sarah Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) to open the lead to 4-1 with 23:22 left.
The Hawks completed the eight-goal run with five more tallies, including three from Pickett, to break the game wide open at 9-1 with 10:27 to play. Jennifer McCarthy halted the run with a goal 1:02 later, but Saint Anselm picked right back up with strikes from Villareal, Daly and Pickett within 1:08 of each other to make it 12-2 with 6:26 to go. Villareal potted two more to close the second-half scoring and send the Hawks into the break with a 14-2 advantage.
Pickett and Doherty opened the second half with goals that made it 16-2 just 3:20 in before Villareal and Daly completed the nine-goal stretch to widen the margin to 18-2. Emily Orser grabbed the Owls' third goal, with Marshall and Stazinski wrapping up the scoring with 10:41 on the clock.
Senior Katherine Amato (Bedford, N.H.) earned her first win of the season as she stopped one of three shots in the first half. Sophomore Jane Bunn (St. John's, Fla.) turned away two of three shots in the first 19:19 of the second stanza, while junior Allee Ramzi (Cumberland, R.I.) saved all four shots she saw in the final 10:41. Vanessa Pagano made four saves for Southern Connecticut.
Saint Anselm held a 30-16 advantage in shots, including 18-7 in the first half, and also owned a 13-12 edge in draw controls. The Hawks were 2-for-3 on their free-position attempts, while the Owls went 0-for-3.
The third-seeded Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 30 at 4 p.m. as they open the Northeast-10 Championship by playing host to sixth-seeded Bentley.
