Women’s Lax Nearly Pulls Upset; Daly Scores 100th Goal in 11-9 Loss at #4 Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Freshman Caitlin Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.) recorded a team-high four points and sophomore Marissa Daly (Marshfield, Mass.) scored the 100th goal of her career, but the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team was narrowly defeated by fourth-ranked Adelphi University, 11-9, Saturday afternoon at Motamed Field.

The Hawks dip to 8-4 on the season, including 5-3 in Northeast-10 play, while the Panthers remain perfect at 12-0, 8-0 NE-10.

Daly reached the milestone 11:04 into the contest with her 46th goal of the season.

Villareal answered Devan Crimi's goal to tie the game at one just 1:18 in off a feed from Daly. Crimi scored again, however, and assisted on a Danielle Jaycox tally to put the hosts up 3-1 less than four minutes in.

Villareal returned the favor to set up a Daly goal at 18:56 and then Daly fed senior Carrie Brophy (Mansfield, Mass.) exactly a minute later to knot the game at three. The Hawks were not done, however, as freshman Michelle Kudlate (Waltham, Mass.) found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore Kelly Pickett  (Chelmsford, Mass.) before freshman Katie McKenna (Danvers, Mass.) beat Adelphi goalkeeper Jordann Dempsey on a free-position attempt to put Saint Anselm on top, 5-3, with 9:21 remaining in the opening half.

Adelphi answered with two scores 22 seconds apart, including one from Crimi that tied the game at five with 8:34 to play. McKenna scored again to put the Hawks in front, 6-5, with 6:16 left, but it was the last time they would lead as the Panthers scored three straight to grab a two-goal lead. Villareal potted an unassisted tally with seven ticks on the clock to close the gap to 8-7 at the half.

Scoring was at a premium in the second half, with Adelphi scoring the first two goals, including one from Jaycox that made it 10-7 with 8:41 to go in regulation. A Villareal free-position goal 45 seconds later, followed by the second Pickett-to-Kudlate connection of the afternoon with 5:32 remaining, trimmed the Saint Anselm deficit to 10-9.    Adelphi would ice it, however, when Alexa Froccaro found the back of the net with eight seconds on the clock.

Sophomore goalkeeper Allee Ramzi (Cumberland, R.I.) stopped 10 shots, including seven in the opening stanza. Dempsey did not make a save in the first half, while Taylor Hayes stopped five shots in the second period.

The Panthers held a 27-17 shot advantage, including 19-9 in the first half, while also winning 15 of 22 draw controls. Saint Anselm was 2-for-3 on free-position chances and Adelphi was 0-for-1.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 17 at 4 p.m. when they take on Saint Michael's College. The Hawks return home Saturday, April 20 at 11 a.m. when they play host to Le Moyne College at Grappone Stadium.
