WINCHENDON, Mass. – Sophomore Amanda Conger had two goals and one assist and freshman Katy Meehan scored the game-winning goal with 1:31 remaining to send the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory at Franklin Pierce University on Friday evening at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
Saint Anselm (14-2-1, 9-1-1 NEWHA) twice held one-goal leads but Franklin Pierce (10-7-1, 4-7 NEWHA) responded both times to tie the game at 2-2 with 12:50 remaining in the third. The teams remained tied until Meehan netted her eighth goal of the season at 18:29 of the third to give the Hawks the lead again, before Conger tacked on an empty-net, power-play goal inside the final minute.
In addition to Conger's career-high three points, three Hawks had a goal and an assist, as Meehan, Caley Mueller and Jackie Guy each had two-point nights. Sophomore Michaela Kane earned her third victory in as many starts this season with 14 saves as Saint Anselm defeated Franklin Pierce for the 15th time in 15 all-time meetings.
Following a scoreless first period, Guy got the scoring started at 4:37 with her fourth of the year, tucking home a rebound off a Conger shot from the left point. Two and a half minutes later, Marissa Massaro knotted the score at 1-1, cleaning up a loose puck in the slot after Katie Neuburger's shot was knocked down by the Saint Anselm defense.
Before the second period was over, Saint Anselm went back ahead on a power-play goal from Conger. Megan Klaus took a shot from the middle of the blue line that was knocked down by the defense. Conger corralled the loose puck and threw a backhand at the net from just outside the hash marks that found its way in.
After Alex Brolsma tied the game at 2-2 by putting home a rebound at the right post, the teams remained even until Meehan's first-career game-winning goal. Meehan and classmate Madison Sprague created a 2-on-1 off a turnover and Sprague centered for Meehan to snap a shot inside the left post. Mueller set up Conger's empty-netter, sliding the puck to Conger from right to left on a 2-on-1 rush after Guy dug the puck out of the defensive end.
Kelly Turney made 26 saves for Franklin Pierce but took the loss to fall to 4-4-1 on the season. The Hawks were 2-for-5 on the power play in the game, while Franklin Pierce was 1-for-6. Shots for the game finished 30-16 in favor of Saint Anselm.
The two teams complete their regular-season series at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 as they kick off a doubleheader on Pink In The Rink Weekend at Sullivan Arena.
