Women’s Basketball clips Roberts Wesleyan, 78-70

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team picked up a 78-70 victory at Roberts Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action in Rochester, N.Y.

The Hawks improve to 6-4 overall and have now won three of their last four games, while the Redhawks drop to 7-5. Saint Anselm is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Daemen College for a 1 p.m. matchup.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Hawks led by 18 points and six rebounds from Caitlyn Abela. Clairee Putnam knocked down 4-of-5 three pointers en route to 16 points, while Candace Andrews tallied 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Ali Glennon chipped in 12 points and four assists, with Kaila Duarte grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds to go with seven points and five assists.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by 19 points from Emily Miller, while Sara Nady added 15 points.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Abela and Putnam staked the Hawks to an early 8-4 lead, and two-straight layups from Duarte and Putnam put Saint Anselm ahead 12-4 with 6:55 to play in the first quarter. Roberts Wesleyan answered with a 7-0 run to climb back to 12-11, and the two teams traded baskets for the rest of the period as the Hawks took a 21-18 lead into the second quarter.

Saint Anselm scored the first five points of the second quarter, but the Redhawks fired right back with five-straight points of their own to make it a 26-23 game and force a Saint Anselm timeout. The Hawks eventually built a 37-28 lead after a Michaela Martin score inside capped a 7-0 run by the visitors and forced an RWU timeout.

Candace Andrews gave Saint Anselm a 42-31 lead in the final seconds of the half, but a 1-for-2 trip at the line from Roberts Wesleyan's Kindsay Brandt made it a 42-32 game headed into the break.

Out of the half, Ali Glennon canned a three and Kaila Duarte scored inside to give the Hawks their largest lead of the game at 47-32. With Saint Anselm in front 54-41 following an Andrews layup, the Redhawks rattled off a 9-0 run to make it a four-point game at 54-50 with 23 seconds remaining. Clairee Putnam knocked down two free throws before the end of the quarter to give the Hawks a 56-50 lead headed into the final period.

Saint Anselm opened the final stanza with back-to-back threes from Abela and Glennon before an Emma Daly free throw put the Hawks back on top 63-50. The Redhawks clawed their way back into the game as Taya Andrews sandwiched three-pointers around an Emily Miller score to cut the deficit to 65-63 with 5:03 to play.

Erin Waters gave the Hawks a 69-65 lead with a jumper, and answered a Miller layup by knocking down another shot to keep it a 71-67 lead with 3:03 remaining. Andrews connected on two-straight jumpers to give Saint Anselm a 75-67 advantage, and the Hawks were able to ice the game by going 3-for-4 at the charity stripe to hang on for the 78-70 win.

Saint Anselm shot 31-of-54 (57.4%) from the floor, 9-of-16 (56.3%) from three and 7-of-14 (50%) from the free throw line. Roberts Wesleyan connected on 28-of-64 (43.8%) shots, 8-of-23 (34.8%) three-pointers and 6-of-8 (75%) of their free throws. The Hawks won the rebounding battle, 32-23, but committed 18 turnovers to just 12 for the Redhawks.
