Men's tennis edged by Assumption despite strong start in doubles

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's tennis team won two of the three doubles matches but Assumption College rallied with four singles wins to edge the Hawks 5-4 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Carr Center.

Saint Anselm (3-10, 0-4 NE10) got out to a strong start with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles but Assumption (2-0, 1-0 NE10) picked up singles victories at the top-four positions to earn the conference win. Brian Madden won both of his matches on the afternoon to lead the Hawks in the loss.

The Hawks won the first two doubles matches to finish to take an early 2-0 lead. Madden and Brian Kavanagh raced past Casey Hodor and Tom Knight 8-2 at No. 3 doubles before Adam Weinstein and Daniel Kmetz topped Ryan Foster and Danny Waung 8-3 at the second spot.

The win for Weinstein and Kmetz raised their record to 6-5 on the season, the best of any doubles tandem for Saint Anselm. Chris Waung and Marco Leung gave Assumption one point headed into singles with an 8-4 victories at No. 1 doubles.

The Greyhounds picked up straight-set victories at the top-three singles spots to go ahead 4-2. Kyle Harris got the Hawks within one, 4-3, with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hodor at No. 5 singles. The win was the junior's team-high sixth singles victory this season.

The clinching point for Assumption came from Danny Waung at No. 4 singles, as he defeated Kmetz 7-5, 6-1. Madden won the final match on court by a 6-3, 7-5 margin over Knight at sixth singles.

Saint Anselm travels to Saint Michael's for a 3 p.m. match on Tuesday, March 21.
