Men's soccer celebrates 50th season, falls in 2OT to Saint Rose

MANCHESTER, N.H.Jack Heintzelman put the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team on top with a first-half header before visiting Saint Rose sent the game to overtime and scored 23 seconds into the second extra session to come away with a 2-1 victory on Saturday at Melucci Field.

Heintzelman netted his first goal of the season in the 26th minute for Saint Anselm (0-3-1, 0-2-0 NE10) and the Hawks held the lead until the 73rd minute when Saint Rose (1-4-0, 1-1-0 NE10) tied it on an Elidon Bardhollari goal. The Golden Knights went on to claim the victory when David Haston scored 23 seconds after the second-overtime kickoff off a cross from Oskar Aastroem.

The game marked the third double overtime game in just four games this season for Saint Anselm. The game also served as a celebration of the 50th season of men's soccer on the Hilltop, as over 30 alumni were in attendance and honored on the field at halftime.

The opening goal came from a Heintzelman header off an Emmet O'Callaghan corner after 25:42. The senior made a near-post run and sent a glancing header into the back of the net for the fifth goal of his career.

Saint Anselm maintained the lead at the break after outshooting Saint Rose 8-5 in the opening 45 minutes. However, the visitors pulled even in the 73rd minute when Bardhollari nodded in a cross from the left by Aaron Muia from six yards out.

Neither team could find a winner in the final 17 minutes of regulation or the first overtime period, with Dan Kelly having a couple chances on headers in the first extra session. The Golden Knights kicked off the second overtime and Aastroem made his way to the end line on the right and found Haston in the box for the game-winning tally.

Saint Anselm held a slender 14-13 advantage in shots in the game. Gianni Carillo and Helio Meirelles Neto each made four saves, with Carillo earning his first win of the season and Neto taking the setback.

The Hawks travel to Saint Michael's for their second matchup with the Purple Knights on Wednesday, Sept. 20 for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
