Ski teams qualify for regionals at Proctor

ANDOVER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's and women's skiing teams both qualified for the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Eastern Regional Championships, as the women posted two fourth-place finishes and the men were fifth in both races at Blackwater/Proctor Academy on Saturday.

The women qualified after finishing fourth in the regular-season MacConnell Division standings, while the men had to wait till the final race on Saturday to book their spot at regionals. The men trailed UMass by two points in the standings entering the day, but finished one spot ahead of UMass in both races to grab the final spot and qualify for regionals for the second-straight year. The women earned their first regional berth since 2015.

For the women, senior Taylor Cudhea, sophomore Katherine Quinn and freshman Emilie Brush made up the top-three finishers in both slalom races for the Hawks. In the first race, Cudhea placed 11th (1:41.44), Quinn was 13th (1:43.94) and Brush came in 17th (1:46.43). Brush's 17th-place finish matched her best placement of the season. Saint Anselm compiled 22 points in the team standings, six ahead of UMass while trailing Castleton, Babson and UConn.

The men drew even with UMass in the team standings in the first race of the day, finishing 14 points ahead of UMass in fifth. Senior Benji Page led the Hawks with a 13th-place showing (1:41.89) and was joined in the top-20 by sophomore Luke Heald in 17th (1:43.23). Senior Alex Conrad put together his top placement of the season by posting a 22nd-place finish (1:55.55).

Cudhea compiled Saint Anselm's best finish of the day in the second race by coming in ninth overall (1:46.20), giving her seven-straight top-15 performances. Quinn and Brush again rounded out the top-three, finishing in 13th and 18th with times of 1:49.26 and 1:51.59, respectively. The women closed out the regular season comfortably in fourth place in the MacConnell Division with another fourth-place showing with 23 points, just one ahead of UMass.

With their regional status up in the air in the final race, the men edged UMass for the final spot by 15 points in the second race to claim the fifth spot. Heald's 17th-place finish (1:47.33) led the Hawks in the final race. After Page fell in his first run, sophomore Joe Wirth recorded his second-best placement of the season by coming in 22nd (1:58.01) and Conrad was 24th (1:58.76) to seal the men's spot at regionals.

The USCSA Eastern Regional Championships will be held at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y. on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 24-25.
