Murray, Gowen lead skiing teams on first day at Whiteface Mountain

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Jill Murray and Alex Gowen were the top finishers for the Saint Anselm College skiing teams on day one of Clarkson Carnival giant slalom at Whiteface Mountain on Friday.

The women had three skiiers finish in the top 20, led by Murray's 11th-place showing (2:14.36). Leika Scott placed 17th (2:17.65) and Taylor Cudhea was 19th (2:20.69) to join Murray in the top 20.

Emily Mason and Katharine Graham were separated by less than two-tenths of a second in 28th and 29th. Mason completed the two runs in 2:30.81, while Graham did so in 2:30.95.

For the men, Gowen led Saint Anselm for the third-straight race by finishing ninth overall with a time of 2:08.94. The ninth-place showing was Gowen's best of the season.

Luke Heald and Alex Conrad were the two other Hawks to complete both runs on a day that saw 23 of 56 competitors not complete two runs. Heald placed 21st in 2:16.19, while Conrad was 24th in 2:23.95.

Both teams finished sixth in the team standings on day one.

Saint Anselm competes on day two of the event on Saturday, Jan. 28.
