SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 17 Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team cut an early five-goal deficit to one with 11:40 remaining, but No. 2 Le Moyne scored the final two goals to hold off the Hawks by a 10-7 score in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
Le Moyne (10-1, 7-1 NE10) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter before Saint Anselm (4-4, 3-3 NE10) gradually cut into its deficit. The Hawks got within a goal, 8-7, inside the final 12 minutes, only for the Dolphins to score a little over a minute later and wind down the clock to see out the win.
The second-ranked Dolphins were Saint Anselm's second-straight top-three opponent and its third-straight opponent to be ranked in the top 10. The seven goals were the most for the Hawks against the Dolphins since a narrow 8-7 loss on April 30, 2010.
James Olsen scored a hat trick to lead the Saint Anselm attack, while Mark Vitello also contributed three points on two goals and one assist. Anthony Busconi added a goal and an assist and Ryan Hesseltine also found the back of the net.
Defensively, Drew Bourdeau paced the Hawks with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Busconi and Derrick LaBranche each scooped up three ground balls as well. Lucas DeAngelo made six saves and picked up four ground balls in net.
Six players scored in the game for Le Moyne, which was led by Tom Koster's four-goal performance. Dan Entenmann chipped in with two goals for the hosts, while Ryan Desmond grabbed a team-high four ground balls. Goalkeeper Jack Sweeney improved to 10-1 this season despite saving just 3-of-10 shots faced.
Le Moyne seized control in the first quarter, scoring twice in the first 3:07 on its way to a 5-0 lead after 15 minutes. The Saint Anselm attack got going midway through the second quarter, scoring three-straight goals, two by Olsen, to get within two inside the final five minutes of the first half. The Dolphins responded with back-to-back goals in the final 1:29 to take a 7-3 lead at the half.
The Hawks outscored the Dolphins 3-1 in the third quarter to close within two headed to the fourth. Hesseltine started the quarter with a man-up goal from Vitello before Vitello and Busconi added unassisted tallies following a Koster goal.
Early in the fourth quarter, Busconi found an open Olsen in front from behind the net to make it a one-goal game with 11:40 remaining. Koster netted his fourth goal of the game 1:07 later to restore Le Moyne's two-goal advantage. From there, the hosts wound down the clock and added an unassisted goal from Sean Emerson with 2:44 left to seal the victory.
Le Moyne used a 14-5 advantage in shots in the first quarter to outshoot Saint Anselm 37-27 on the afternoon. The Hawks held a 24-21 edge in ground balls, including a 14-9 advantage in the second half, while the Dolphins won 12-of-20 faceoffs in the game. The hosts were 2-for-4 on man-up situations, while Saint Anselm was 1-for-2.
Saint Anselm heads to Saint Michael's on Tuesday, April 11 for a 3 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference matchup against the Purple Knights. The last three meetings between the two programs have been decided by a single goal with the Hawks coming out on top in two of the three games.
