Men’s Lax Captures Third Straight With 13-9 Win at American Int’l

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Geoff Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) and senior Ryan Mee (Medway, Mass.) combined for 11 points to lead the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team to Saturday's 13-9 victory against American International College at Abdow Field.

The Hawks, who have won three straight and sit in the fifth playoff spot in the Northeast-10 with three contests remaining, improve to 5-6 on the season and 4-4 in NE-10 play. The Yellow Jackets drop to 2-12, 1-8 NE-10.

Kennedy scored four goals and handed out two assists, while Mee also buried four goals and added a helper.

Saint Anselm went up, 1-0, just 2:01 into the contest on a goal from senior Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) off a feed from classmate Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.). Nick Amendt and Justin Bard would score what would be their only goals of the day to lift AIC into the lead at 2-1 with 10:14 remaining in the opening quarter, but a pair from Kennedy sandwiched a strike from Messner to give the Hawks the lead for good at 4-2 with 3:11 to play.

Bobby Spano kicked off the second-quarter scoring for AIC by finding the back of the net 3:35 in, but Saint Anselm ripped off four straight to close the stanza – with three coming from Mee. The Hawks stretched the run to six straight as Mallinson and Mee began the third quarter with tallies that widened the gap to 10-3 with 12:43 left.

Spano stopped the bleeding, but junior James Peters (Medway, Mass.) potted his second of the day to keep Saint Anselm's seven-goal cushion intact with just under two minutes remaining in the third. Eric Overdahl answered with 40 seconds on the clock, however, and the Yellow Jackets went into the fourth quarter trailing 11-5.

Kennedy buried one just 22 seconds into the final frame, but Overdahl answered again before Spano scored two straight to cut the deficit to 12-8 with 6:21 to play. Freshman Colin Swanson (Nashua, N.H.) collected his first collegiate point by connecting on a pass to Kennedy, who fired the ball into the back of the net to give Saint Anselm a five-goal lead with 3:28 remaining.

Spano responded 1:26 later to make it 13-9, but that would close the scoring as the Hawks staved off any hopes of an AIC comeback.

Sophomore goalkeeper James O'Neill (East Walpole, Mass.) stopped a career-high 14 of the 23 shots he faced. Perry Booker also made 14 saves for the Yellow Jackets in 58:16 of action, while John Magliano turned away the one shot he saw over the final 1:44.

Mallinson finished with a goal and two assists, while Peters registered a pair of goals and an assist. Messner added a goal and an assist and junior Charles Geraghty (Norwich, Vt.) collected a pair of helpers.

Saint Anselm held a narrow 41-39 edge in shots and won 15 of 26 faceoffs. AIC was 1-for-3 on extra-man opportunities, while the Hawks were 1-for-4.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. as they travel to take on Merrimack College. The next home game for the Hawks is Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. when they play host to Pace University on Senior Day at Grappone Stadium.
