Peters, Mallinson Pave Way to 12-9 Victory Over Franklin Pierce
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior James Peters (Medway, Mass.) and senior Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.) each scored four goals to lead the way as the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team took down Franklin Pierce University, 12-9, Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks rebound to snap a three-game losing skid and improve to 3-6 on the season, including 2-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Ravens drop to 5-3, 3-3 NE-10.
Junior Andy Budz (Williamstown, Mass.) staked claim on a 1-0 lead for Saint Anselm, before Mallinson and Peters each found the back of the net to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead with 6:22 left in the first quarter. Junior Geoff Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) was assisting on the first goal of the game and Peters connected with Mallinson to put the Hawks up 2-0.
Franklin Pierce put together a two-goal rally to make it 3-2 with goals to close scoring in the first quarter and open the second. Peters had the answer to the rally, however, when senior Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) fed him a pass at 11:11 of the second and he beat Raven goalie Dan Denman.
The Ravens answered Peters' second of the day when Erik Kelly found the net at 7:58. Mallinson and Peters teamed up again to create a scoring burst for the Hawks, doubling up on the Ravens, 6-3 to take the game into the half.
Franklin Pierce opened the third with a goal, before Mallinson notched his third of the game and then the Hawks and Raven traded points again to take the game to a score of 8-5 at 10:17 of the third stanza. Mee scored the second for the Hawks thanks to an assist from junior Charles Geraghty (Norwich, Vt.).
Freshman Brennan Quackenbush (Marshfield, Mass.) picked up a Raven turnover in the Raven zone and ran the ball to the net at 7:24 of the third for his first career goal. Franklin Pierce had the answer less than a minute later and then Mee scored with 14 seconds left in the quarter off an assist from Messner to give Saint Anselm a 10-6 lead.
The Ravens opened the final frame with a pair of strikes and then then Mallinson came through with his final goal of the day, extending the lead back to three at 11-8. The Ravens earned one back to come within two, but Peters closed the door with his fouth goal with just 44 seconds left in the game.
Sophomore goalie James O'Neill (East Walpole, Mass.) made 10 saves for the Hawks to earn the win. Senior Matthew Steele (Ipswich, Mass.) was 19-for-24 on the faceoff and picked up 10 ground balls. Sophomores Ben Warren (Georgetown, Mass.) and Jake Stokes (Beverly, Mass.) picked up four ground balls each. The Hawks held a 53-31 shot advantage.
