Men’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to LIU Post, 17-5

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Senior Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.) and junior James Peters (Medway, Mass.) each recoded a goal and an assist for two points, but the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team fell to LIU Post, 17-5, in its 2014 season opener on the road at Hickox Field.

With the loss, Saint Anselm will fall to 0-1 on the young season, while the Pioneers begin their season at 1-0.

Trailing 15-0, the Hawks scored a goal a of their own with 2:32 remaining in the third quarter as junior Geoff Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) received a pass from Peters and found the back of the net on a Saint Anselm power play. 

LIU tacked on one more to close the third, before Mallinson struck with the extra man at 3:02 of the fourth, making the score 16-2 and starting a four-goal rally for the Hawks. Sophomore Ben Warren (Georgetown, Mass.) scored the second straight Hawk goal at 6:19 after he received a pass from Mallinson. Peters found the net at 7:11 as the Hawks were playing on the extra-man advantage to make it a 16-4 game and senior Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) completed the rally with his goal with 7:08 left on the clock.

Senior Matthew Steele (Ipswich, Mass.) was 14-for-22 on the faceoff and picked up eight groundballs. Sophomore goalie James O'Neill (East Walpole, Mass.) stopped 11 shots for Saint Anselm.
