MANCHESTER, N.H. – Ryan Mee (Medway, Mass.) led the Hawks with five points, while Geoff Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.), Ben Warren (Georgetown, Mass.), Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) and Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.) each contributed three as the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team was victorious over American International College, 19-10, Saturday evening at Grappone Stadium.
With the win, the Hawks jump to 3-7 overall and 3-5 in the Northeast-10 conference, while the Yellow Jackets dip to 1-11 on the 2013 season and 0-8 in league play.
Mee scored his first goal of the game just 1:02 into the game when he found the back of the net, staking claim on a 1-0 lead for the Hawks. AIC answered with 5:27 to play in the quarter, when Jess Sienkiewicz delivered on the extra-man advantage, knotting the game at one.
Saint Anselm scored four straight, bringing the game to a score of 5-1 at the start of the second quarter as Mee, Warren, Daniel Sullivan (Rumford, R.I.) and Kennedy all chipped in with a tally each.
The Yellow Jackets scored back-to-back goals, both from Nick Amendt to cut the Hawk lead to two, but Charles Geraghty (Etna, N.H.) scored his second goal of the season on a feed from Mallinson, to double up the Saint Anselm lead at 6-3. Messner tacked on another score – to extend the lead to four with 7:32 left in the first half.
AIC cut the lead to 7-6, with three goals up to the 2:31 mark in the second quarter. The Hawks, however, went on a 12-4 run to put the game out of reach for the Yellow Jackets. Messner and James Peters (Medway, Mass.) got the rally started with one goal apiece to end the half.
The third quarter was opened with an AIC notch, followed by four straight Saint Anselm goals. Two from Andy Budz (Williamstown, Mass.), as well as one each from Geraghty and James Brine (Burlington, Mass.) helped bring the game to a score of 13-7. AIC earned one back when Sean Kelleher sent the ball past senior goalkeeper Jonathon O'Reilly (Plano, Texas), who made seven saves on the day.
Mee started the fourth with a pair of goals, before AIC scored two as well, slicing the lead to five at 15-10. Saint Anselm scored four to end the contest, with goals from Peters, Warren, Kennedy and Mallinson. Peters and Mallinson each potted their goals with the extra player.
Saint Anselm held a 62-31 edge in shots, while Matthew Steele (Ipswich, Mass.) was dominant on faceoffs going 24-33 with 14 groundballs.
