Men’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against #12 Molloy, 13-5
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Ryan Mee (Medway, Mass.) tallied four points and Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) backed him up with three, but the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 12-nationally ranked Molloy College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 13-5 at Grappone Stadium.
With the loss, the Hawks will dip to 0-2 on the young season, while the Lions will improve to an untarnished 3-0.
Molloy jumped out of the gate gaining a 3-0 lead with three goals in three minutes to open the game. The Lions saw two goals from Kenny Lutz and their third from Peter Clark.
Saint Anselm was able to net a goal of its own with 2:56 remaining on the clock when Mee sent a pass to Ben Warren (Georgetown, Mass.) and he found the back of the net on the extra-man advantage for his first collegiate goal.
Joe Leonard and Lutz each struck again for Molloy to close out the scoring in the first quarter giving the Lions a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.
Lutz fired his fourth goal past Saint Anselm goal keeper Jonathon O'Reilly (Plano, Texas) on a feed from Patrick Mulligan just under three minutes into the second quarter, to boost the Lion lead to five.
Just 17 seconds later, however, the Hawks came with the answer as Mee notched a goal of his own after receiving a pass from Messner, cutting Molloy's lead to four at 6-2.
At 9:11 of the second, Joseph Biscardi gave Molloy the 7-2 edge while the Hawks were down a player. Mee and Messner connected for a second time, however, putting the Hawks back within four – thanks to Mee's score – heading into halftime.
Lutz's fifth goal opened up the third quarter and was answered by a Saint Anselm goal from Mee, who grabbed a pass from Andrew McIntyre (North Andover, Mass.), cutting the Molloy lead in half at 8-4.
The Lions went on to score three straight, bringing the game to a score of 11-4, before Messner attempted the comeback with his third point of the day with 8:47 left in the game.
Molloy potted two more goals, from Austin Valenti and Joseph Biscardi to finalize the score at 13-5.
O'Reilly made 12 saves, while Molloy's John Grebe tallied one more for 13 and improves to 3-0 on the season.
Faceoffs were split down the middle, with each team winning 10. Molloy held the 35-34 advantage in shots, while the Hawks were 3-7 in extra-man opportunities.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. when they open Northeast-10 conference action and play host to Adelphi University.
