Men's Lacrosse Defeats Saint Rose, Extends Record Winning Streak
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team extended their program record winning streak to eight games with a 10-6 victory over the College of Saint Rose Tuesday evening at Grappone Stadium. With the victory, the No. 9-ranked Hawks boast an 8-1 overall record and an unblemished Northeast-10 Conference record (5-0). The Golden Knights, in their first season as a varsity program, hold a 5-5 record through a non-conference schedule.
Through the first half of action, the Hawks and Golden Knights traded goals and played to a 4-4 score through 30 minutes of play. Freshman midfielder Andrew Budz (Williamstown, Mass.) scored his fourth goal of the season to tie the game at one apiece with 7:21 remaining in the first period, but Kevin Fleming scored his second goal of the contest with 2:19 remaining in the quarter to grant the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead through the first 15 minutes.
The Hawks outscored Saint Rose in the second quarter by a 3-2 margin, as captain Tyler Steinetz (Sparta, N.J.), sophomore midfielder Ryan Mee (Medway, Mass.) and junior midfielder Daniel Sullivan (Rumford, R.I.) scored to tie the game at four exiting the first half of play. For the Golden Knights, Brett McAuliffe recorded a goal and an assist in the quarter to bolster the offense for Saint Rose.
Saint Anselm scored six goals in the second half to silence any potential Saint Rose comeback in the final half. Freshman midfielder James Peters (Medway, Mass.) scored three goals in the second half, leading the team cumulatively in the goal scoring department. Steinetz, Mee and senior attack Alex Vinciguerra (Canton, Mass.) chipped in with goals in the second half to add insurance. Fleming added his third goal of the game for Saint Rose alongside a Rich Bamberger tally with 7:33 remaining in the third quarter but the Golden Knights could not score any additional goals in the contest.
Hawks goaltender Jonathon O'Reilly (Plano, Texas) collected his eighth straight victory in net for Saint Anselm, making 16 saves on 23 shots on goal. Saint Rose netminder Nick Longo made 10 saves for the Golden Knights but allowed 10 Saint Anselm goals in the loss, his fifth of the season.
