MANCHESTER, N.H. – First-year head coach Jim Tortorella and the Saint Anselm College men's hockey program have announced the team's 25-game schedule for the 2017-18 season, as released on Friday.
Twelve of Saint Anselm's 25 games in 2017-18 will come on its home ice at Sullivan Arena, including the first six games of Tortorella's first season on the Hilltop. The Hawks will face Northeast-10 Conference opponents Franklin Pierce, Saint Michael's, Southern New Hampshire, Assumption and Stonehill, as well as Post, three times apiece, in addition to seven non-conference games.
"Regardless of what league we are a member of, we always want to schedule the highest possible competitive schedule for our student-athletes," Tortorella said. "Besides some factors beyond our control, we believe we have done just that for 2017-18."
The Hawks open the season at home against Bryn Athyn on Friday, Oct. 27 before four-straight home NE10 matchups to begin November. Saint Michael's and Queen City Cup rival Southern New Hampshire visit Manchester on the first two Fridays of November, prior to a weekend series against Post on Nov. 17-18.
After a home game against Worcester State on Tuesday, Nov. 21, the first meeting between the two programs since 2001-02, Saint Anselm heads to Maine for the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off on Nov. 24-25. The Hawks will face Bowdoin on day one of the tournament and Colby, where Tortorella is the program's winningest head coach with 230 victories over 16 seasons, the next day. November ends with a trip to Assumption on Nov. 28.
There are just three games on the schedule in December, beginning with Franklin Pierce's visit to Sullivan Arena on Dec. 1. After that, the Hawks travel to non-conference foes Southern Maine and Plymouth State on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, respectively.
January begins with a home game against Wentworth, the second-ever meeting with the Leopards, on Jan. 6, which is followed by a weekend series at Stonehill. The Hawks return home for Alumni Weekend on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19-20 against Assumption before closing the month with a home game against Stonehill on Jan. 30.
Six of Saint Anselm's seven games in February are on the road, including weekend series at Saint Michael's and Franklin Pierce to begin the month. The regular season ends with three games in a five-day stretch starting with the program's first-ever trip to Post on Feb. 13. The Hawks conclude the regular season by hosting Southern New Hampshire on Feb. 16 and facing the Penmen at SNHU Arena the next day.
