MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Matthew Flynn went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to Bentley University, 7-5, on Monday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Sullivan Park in Manchester, N.H.
The Hawks (9-20, 4-11 NE10) will try and rebound on Tuesday afternoon when they host St. Michael's College at 3:30 p.m. Bentley improves to 7-19-1 and 5-6-1 in league games with the win.
Max Wadington (2-for-4, RBI, R), Nick Bragole (2-for-5, R) and Dan Bodi (2-for-3, 2R) also added multi-hit days for the Hawks. Shaine Carpenter and John Marculitis each went 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Connor Parent was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Autrey Gates suffered the setback for Saint Anselm, pitching six innings and allowing six runs on 12 hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Preston Yerrington gave up a run in 2.1 innings, while Zane Byrne only gave up one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Bentley had five players register mulit-hit days led by a 3-for-5 showing from Max Troiani. Nick Neshe (RBI, R), Peter Bocchino (2 RBI, R) and Tom Diskin (2R) each went 2-for-4 on the day, while Brandon Grover was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Luke Dawson earned the win for the Falcons, allowing four runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings of work. Ryan Corriveau picked up his fourth save of the season, pitching two innings and allowing a run on two hits with a walk.
The Falcons scored first in the opening inning as Brandon Grover led off the game with a double to right-center and he later scored on an RBI groundout by Ryan Berardino.
The Hawks answered with a run in the bottom of the third as Connor Parent opened the frame with a double and Dan Bodi worked a walk. After the duo was sacrificed into scoring position by Aaron Crandall, Matthew Flynn picked up his first RBI with a sacrifice fly to centerfield that tied the game at 1-1.
Bentley took the lead back in the top of the fifth as Nick Neshe drove in Tom Diskin with an RBI single. The Falcons added to their lead in the sixth as Peter Bocchino drove in a pair with a two-run homerun to right center to make it a 4-1 game. The next two batters reached on a walk and a single before Brandon Grover drove in a run with a single to first base. Neshe put the Falcons on top 6-1 as he beat out a double play to allow Diskin to score from third.
Saint Anselm rallied with a pair of runs with two outs in their half of the sixth. Wadington and Bragole hit back-to-back singles, and Carpenter came through with another single that scored Wadington. Marculitis then stepped in and smoked a ball off the third baseman's glove that allowed Bragole to score and cut the deficit in half at 6-3.
Both teams went in order in the eighth, but the Falcons tacked on an insurance run in the ninth as Troiani drove in Neshe with an RBI single to left field to make it a 7-4 game.
With one out in the ninth, Dan Bodi doubled down the left field line and he later scored on a two-out RBI single up the middle off the bat of Flynn. Wadington worked a walk to put runners on first and second, and the two runners moved into scoring position following a wild pitch. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the rally would end there as Corriveau struck out the final batter he faced to close out the 7-5 victory.
