RINDGE, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team picked up a 7-2 victory over Saint Michael's College on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Pappas Field in Rindge, N.H.
The Hawks improve to 7-13 overall and 2-6 in the NE10, while St. Michael's drops to 0-5 both overall and in league games. Saint Anselm had its game at Stonehill College scheduled for tomorrow postponed, so the Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to American International College for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
Senior Nick Bragole went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Jonathan Dunn earned his second win of the season by tossing seven innings and allowing only two runs (one earned) on five hits with a pair of walks and nine strikeouts.
Saint Anselm took advantage of several St. Michael's miscues early in the game as Max Wadington singled with one out in the first inning and worked his way to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Nick Bragole picked up his first RBI of the day with a groundout as the Hawks took the early 1-0 lead.
The Purple Knights tied the game in the top of the third as Calvin Holland bounced into a fielder's choice with runners on the corners, allowing Joe Robertson to come in from third.
Saint Anselm answered with three runs in their half of the inning as Aaron Crandall and Matthew Flynn singled to lead off the inning and then moved into scoring position on a double steal. Wadington drove in Crandall with a sacrifice fly and Nick Bragole followed with an RBI single to plate Flynn and put the Hawks in front 3-1. After Shaine Carpenter singled to move Bragole over to third, Dan Bodi picked up an RBI with a sac fly of his own to give Saint Anselm a 4-1 lead.
With runners on the corners in the top of the fourth, St. Michael's used a double steal of its own as Kyle Cone broke for second base with Dan Flynn on third. The throw from Carpenter made its way to short and Flynn broke for home, avoiding the tag and cutting the Purple Knights' deficit in half at 4-2.
McQuarrie got the run back for Saint Anselm in the bottom of the sixth with a sac fly of his own to score Dan Bodi, and he drove in another run in the eighth with an RBI triple to score Connor Parent. He then came home on a wild pitch to put Saint Anselm ahead, 7-2.
