MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) of the Saint Anselm College women’s ice hockey team and freshman Andrew Murphy (Franklin, Mass.) of the football squad were chosen as the Saint Anselm Student-Athletes of the Week for the period ending Nov. 4.
Foss put together a four-point weekend (1-3-4) as the Hawks went 1-0-1 to remain unbeaten on the season. Foss helped guide her team to a 6-1 win at Nichols College on Friday night as she assisted the game’s first goal, as well as the eventual game winner. The defenseman then handed out a helper on the opening tally of Sunday’s 2-2 tie with Manhattanville College before finding the back of the net 4:13 into the third period to knot the game at two. Foss, who leads the team in scoring with five points on a goal and four assists, ranks fourth in the nation among defenseman with 1.67 points per game. She is second in the ECAC East in assists and is third in scoring among all defensemen in the league.
Murphy, who garners the honor for the second time this season, helped the Hawks set school records for points (52), total offense (774) and passing offense (612) in a 52-45 victory at Seton Hill on Saturday. A week after earning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week and ECAC Offensive Player of the Week honors by setting school records for passing yards and passing touchdowns, the quarterback went 45 of 74 (60.1%) for a school-record 612 yards and a program-record seven touchdown passes. Murphy also set a school record for total offense (624) and matched Michael Pierce’s record for attempts that was set at Stonehill College on Oct. 24, 2009. With his final touchdown toss of the afternoon and 22nd of the year, Murphy broke the school record for passing TDs in a season that was set by Pierce in the 2009 campaign. He is also just 481 passing yards short of Pierce’s 2009 record in that category. Over the last three games, Murphy is 121-for-201 for 1,399 yards and 15 TDs.
Foss and the women’s ice hockey squad hit the ice again Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. when they play host to Salve Regina University at Sullivan Arena.
Murphy and the rest of the eighth-seeded football team return to the gridiron one final time during the 2012 season as they take on fifth-seeded Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 Championship Weekend matchup Saturday, Nov. 10 (1 p.m.) at Martone-Mejail Field.
